China’s fledgling RV and campground industries received a huge boost in favorable government policies following the State Council’s call for rapid growth of the country’s tourism industry last December. Local governments are scrambling for projects which are expected to add hundreds of campgrounds before the end of next year.

Chinese RV manufacturers are caught by a nice surprise. For many years, manufacturers have been trying to promote the lifestyle and grow sales without gaining much traction. Lack of infrastructure, uncertainties in regulatory issues, and minimal consumer exposure and education are cited as the main obstacles for the industry. Now the government’s favorable policies will help change the whole environment for the industry to thrive.

Campground operators, however, are not waiting for domestic manufacturers to come up with the products they are looking for. They want to have trailers on their campgrounds so that they can rent them out to people who are ready for the novel experience and the newly found lifestyle. Campground operators are coming to the states to shop. Because of the number of new campgrounds expected to open, the demand for trailers could be huge. U.S. manufacturers, and European and Australian manufacturers for this matter, need to get themselves ready for the Chinese buyers and start thinking about their overall China strategies.
