Palm tree on beachFueled by the demand of tourists, China’s $150 billion tourism industry sees tremendous growth over the past decade. Compared with 740 million people in 2000, the number of domestic tourists more than doubled in 2007 to reach 1.6 billion, according to China National Tourism Administration.

The government’s policy to promote consumer spending, mandatory national holidays, and government employee vacation systems will continue to fuel the industry’s growth. World Travel and Tourism Council estimates that by 2015 China will become the world’s largest market with 2.8 billion domestic tourists.

To cope with the demand, the government encourages investment in infrastructure and best use of tourism resources. In a recent interview by China Central Television, Shao Qiwei, director of CNTA, called for development of more destinations for leisure vacationers. “In the past, people spent a lot of time on traveling and sightseeing. Now the trend is that people like to spend time at a location, whether it’s seaside or forests or springs, to really enjoy the nature”, says Shao. He says China needs some high-end products, including cruises and RVs, to offer vacationers more alternatives.    (Source:
