biofuelStarting next year, light vehicles to be sold in China will be required to have a fuel consumption label. This is based on the Regulations for the Administration of Fuel Consumption Labeling of Light Vehicles issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The fuel efficiency labeling requirements will become effective January 1st, 2010.

According to the Regulations for the Administration of Fuel Consumption Labeling of Light Vehicles (Opinion Draft), manufacturers or importers/dealers of gasoline or diesel vehicles with a designed gross weight of under 3.5 tonnes (approximately 7,716 lbs) for sale within China must, in compliance with the Light Vehicle Fuel Consumption Label requirement, mark the fuel consumption on the vehicles. The label must include corporate logo, labeling/manufacture date, VIN, and fuel consumption (based on tests performed by testing agencies designated by MIIT).

The labeling requirement is just another measure China implements to promote energy efficiency and emission control. While oil prices on the international market continue to rebound and oil prices in China are increasingly aligned with international oil prices, China seriously needs to cut down its thirst for fuel as auto sales see explosive growth.

For foreign RV makers who are interested in selling in China, the soon-to-be-effective labeling requirement is an incentive to introduce fuel efficient models. It helps foreign RV makers with their marketing pitch as many of them are adding light weight, fuel efficient models to their product lineup.
